Despite the fact that automakers do their best to ensure that no issues come up, sometimes things don’t always go according to plan. That’s why auto manufacturers, along with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), are required by law to inform drivers about any safety-related defects concerning their vehicles that do not meet with federal safety guidelines.
When automakers discover such issues, they must alert owners of the problem (or problems) and make provisions for their correction. A letter will be sent to all registered owners or lessees of the affected model with information on how to go about getting the part replaced. While a simple Internet search might show you a list a web pages that claim to have access to such info, it’s smarter to go directly to the legitimate sources. If you’re searching on Nissan’s website, click on the three red horizontal bars at the top right of the homepage. From here, a drop-down menu will appear. Click on the MyNissan link towards the bottom, and you will be redirected to the Nissan Owner Portal. If you scroll all the way to the bottom, there will be a Recalls link for you to click on. This will take you to the Nissan Recall Lookup Tool, which will ask you to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) so it can look up the specific recalls for your model.
If you don’t know your VIN, you can find it on the lower left portion of your car’s windshield, on the doorframe, or on the registration. You may also be able to find it on your insurance card. If you’re navigating from the NHTSA page, the process is just as simple. All you have to do is go to their main web page and click on the same three horizontal bars (located directly to the right of the NHTSA logo) so that a drop-down menu appears. Click on the Recalls link and you will be directed to the Safety Issues & Recalls page. As before, you can input your VIN to the search engine, but you can also look up the make, model, and year of a particular car, as well as the specific car seat, tire, or equipment from a certain brand and/or model.
