2027 Nissan Z Preview

Z Preview
Car enthusiasts surely remember the fast and long-hooded Datsun 240Z, the predecessor of today’s Nissan Z. Decades of happy Z drivers couldn’t deny the satisfaction of owning and operating one, and they’ve surely felt proud to do so. The Z’s storied heritage certainly contributes to its status as an icon, including the stubbornness – some might say – in refusing to give up the manual transmission. After all, true drivers know it’s the only way to go. Since model year 2024, though, that stick shift has been restricted to the lower trim levels, leaving out the ultra-high performance NISMO edition. But as the Z is refreshed for 2027, that negative disappears: For the first time in this current Z generation, the NISMO will have a standard manual transmission, completely engineered to pair with its enhanced powerplant. According to Nissan, this change (along with other updates that are part of the refresh) came in response to consumer demand.
There will be mechanical and styling changes as well, including a revised front end for the lower trims, upgraded wheels and suspension for the Performance trim, a GT-R-derived braking system for the NISMO, along with fuel tank adjustments for all trims to better suit spirited cornering. Look for suspension improvements on the higher trims as well: the Performance is getting larger-diameter shocks for improved damping, and the NISMO’s suspension will be retuned to sync with its lighter brakes.

The 2027 lineup will still consist of the Sport, Performance, and NISMO trims, all of which will have a rear-wheel drivetrain with either a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic transmission. The NISMO will get a short-shift stick with SynchroRev Match technology and special tuning to coordinate with its high-output engine. The automatic will come with paddle shifters and downshift rev-matching.
The 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 is sticking around to put out 400 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque in the lower trims, with a boost to 420 hp and 384 lb.-ft. of torque in the NISMO. We can assume that fuel economy won’t stray from the current version’s 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway with the manual and 19 mpg city/28 mpg highway with the automatic. Since the manual NISMO is novel in this generation, we’re not sure about its ratings, but the automatic should be the same as the 2026 model’s 17 city/24 highway.
Design and Amenities
The classic long and low body and iconic hood bulge aren’t going anywhere, of course, but the Sport and Performance will show off an updated grille design with smooth lines divided by a horizontal center bar in body color. A Z badge will replace the Nissan emblem. Fresh front bumpers designed for better airflow will define the two lower trims’ fascia, granting better aerodynamics with less lift and drag. Forged 19-inch wheels with black-painted spokes and a machine-finished rim will make their statement. As far as the paint palette, Shinkai Green Pearl Metallic will be available to be used in a two-tone treatment with the Super Black roof on the two higher trims. This hue was influenced by the iconic green of the S30-generation Nissan Z, modernized for today with a special pearl effect that plays off sunlight.
The highlights of the interior changes will be a new tan upholstery option for the NISMO, as an alternative to the usual red-accented black leather on that trim’s Recaro performance seats. While the Sport will get fabric-upholstered (and manually adjustable) seats, the Performance will go up to power heated leather-clad seats. Alongside the digital gauge cluster, there will be a dash-mounted performance display that shows the turbocharger boost and turbocharger turbine speed, plus a voltmeter.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Nissan has done some work on the Z’s Active Sound Enhancement to increase the driver and passenger’s enjoyment of the high-quality Bose audio system in the Performance and NISMO. Beyond that, the multimedia situation should remain more or less the same with an 8-inch touchscreen with USB smartphone integration in the base Sport, while the other two trims upgrade to a 9-inch screen with Amazon Alexa built-in and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Standard Siri Eyes Free voice recognition, Bluetooth wireless phone and audio, and SiriusXM satellite radio are expected to return, as will NissanConnect for the Performance and NISMO to access Wi-Fi, navigation, and connected services.
