Nissan produces the Frontier in six trims: S, SV, PRO-X, PRO-4X, SL, and Hardbody Edition. Under the hood of every model is the 3.8-liter V6 engine that pushes out 310 horsepower and 281 pounds-feet of torque. It’s equipped with a nine-speed automatic transmission and the option between rear- and four-wheel drive. The maximum towing capacity is 6,640 pounds; when it’s not being used to tow, it boasts a payload capacity up to 1,620 pounds.
There are two cab configurations to choose from: King Cab and Crew Cab. The S and SV can be equipped with either cab, while the remainder of the trims come only as the Crew Cab setup. Crew cab trucks feature a bed length measuring 59.5 inches, while the King Cab has a 73.3-inch bed. The exception is the SV Crew Cab, which can be built with either bed size. The King Cab is extra versatile for getting oversized cargo into the cabin, as its back doors are pillarless and hinged at the rear side, creating a large door opening without obstruction.
All Frontier trims have the same EPA-estimated city fuel economy rating of 18 mpg. With rear-wheel drive, their highway rating is 24 mpg EPA. Four-wheel drive changes the open-road efficiency to 23 mpg, except for the PRO-4X variant, which gets 22 mpg.
The Frontier S has remote keyless entry with push-button start, automatic headlights, LED taillights, cloth seats, a 7-inch driver information center display, two USB ports, two cup holders, four bottle holders, forward-facing rear flip-up seats, a black front grille, and 16-inch steel wheels. The optional S Utility Package adds two 120-volt AC power outlets (one in the rear center console and one mounted in the bed) and a spray-on bedliner.
The SV receives a 6-way power driver’s seat with two-way lumbar support, premium cloth seats, a body-color front grille, dual power outside mirrors, and 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels. The SV Convenience Package adds dual-zone automatic climate control, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, heated mirrors, a spray-in bedliner, bed under-rail lighting, adjustable tie-down cleats, a trailer hitch with a wiring harness, a sliding rear window, two household-style power outlets, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The PRO-X has embroidered seats with Lava Red contrast stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a leather-wrapped shift knob, Lava Red interior accents, dual-zone automatic climate control, Nissan Intelligent Key, two additional USB ports, four cupholders, a 60/40-split flip-up rear bench seat, LED headlights, LED fog lights, Lava Red front tow hooks, a black front grille, a sliding rear window, and 17-inch dark aluminum alloy wheels. The PRO-4X is meant for off-road adventures with an aluminum front skid plate, underbody skid plates, LED fog lights, and PRO-4X carpeted floor mats. Buyers can add the PRO Premium Package to the PRO-X or PRO-4X to get a sunroof, leather upholstery, wireless device charging, 17-inch Beadlock-style aluminum alloy wheels, some bed upgrades, plus a high-end stereo system (see the Infotainment and Connectivity section for details).
The SL goes upscale with a sliding glass moonroof with tilt, leather-appointed seating, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, household-style power outlets in the rear center console and bed, heated outside mirrors, a trailer hitch with wiring, the Utili-track channel system and two adjustable tie-down cleats, a spray-on bedliner, and 17-inch dark machine-finished aluminum-alloy wheels. The Hardbody Edition invokes feelings from the Frontier’s early days with its sport bar, black exhaust finisher, retro black fender flares, black bumpers, black mirrors, mud flaps, and 17-inch Heritage aluminum-alloy wheels.
Nissan equips every Frontier with these Safety Shield 360 technologies: forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a rearview camera, and driver attention monitoring. The Hardbody Edition gets the Technology Package standard, but it’s optional for the other trims to add high beam assist, rear automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, and rear sonar (the PRO-4X will also get traffic sign recognition with this elective package). The PRO-4X and Hardbody Edition are bolstered with hill descent control. The PRO-X and PRO-4X can adad a 360-degree monitor via the optional PRO Convenience Package.
The base infotainment system has an 8-inch color touchscreen, voice recognition, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a four-speaker sound system; the SV adds another pair of speakers. The SL upgrades to a premium 10-speaker Fender sound system with subwoofers. The PRO-X and PRO-4X move up to a 9-inch touchscreen and add a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless Apple CarPlay, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The PRO-X, PRO-4X, and Hardbody Edition are eligible for a 10-speaker Fender sound system.
