All three trim levels of the ’23 Maxima (SV, SR, and Platinum) have the same heart and soul: a robust 3.5-liter V6 engine making 300 horsepower (and 261 lb.-ft. of torque). Its partner in the powertrain is a continuously variable transmission (CVT); all trims are front-wheel drive. The EPA’s official fuel economy estimates show the Maxima as achieving 20 mpg around town and 30 mpg on the highway.
The well-outfitted SV has a lot of alluring features, especially for a base trim. The highlights are remote start, leather upholstery, heated front seats, LED headlights and taillights, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, heated exterior mirrors with integrated turn-signal indicators, a quad exhaust with chrome finishers, power-adjustable front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and Nissan Intelligent Key (proximity entry). It also has push-button start, automatic climate control (two zones), an auto-dimming rearview mirror, two USB ports (one USB-A and one USB-C), illuminated vanity mirrors, and a 60/40-split folding rear seatback.
The SR upgrades its seats with premium leather with diamond-quilted panels, front-row ventilated seats, and a driver’s-side thigh cushion extender. It also adds a heated steering wheel, a panoramic moonroof, LED fog lights, reverse gear tilt-down side mirrors with driver’s-side auto-dimming, ambient interior lighting (customizable), position memory settings for the driver’s seat and outside mirrors), and an additional USB-A and USB-C port. There are a few sport-minded improvements to the SR that aren’t passed on to the Platinum: a rear spoiler, aluminum sport pedals, active noise cancellation, black exterior accents, and a charcoal headliner.
At the top of the hierarchy, the Platinum’s upgrades make a statement with semi-aniline leather seats with diamond-quilted inserts, heated rear outboard seats, a power rear-window sunshade, a power tilt/telescopic steering wheel with position memory, rain-sensing wipers, wood interior accents, and illuminated kick plates.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 is found in every 2023 Maxima, adding high beam assist, intelligent cruise control, intelligent driver alertness, intelligent forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, reverse automatic braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition. Intelligent lane intervention is added to the two higher trims, along with front parking sensors and the Intelligent Around-View Monitor.
An 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is the rule in each Maxima trim. It includes smartphone integration (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), navigation, a NissanConnect Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and hands-free text messaging assistant. The sound system in the SV has eight speakers, but the SR and Platinum move up to a Bose with 11 speakers and Centerpoint 2 surround-sound.
